Lasers have unique temporal and spatial characteristics. They can generate very short pulses of light of a single wavelength. These characteristics allow the precisely controlled deposition of a great amount of energy into a selected region of material.

Using ultrafast laser pulses instead of standard long-pulse lasers (essentially machining with laser pulses of very short duration) eliminates heat flow to surrounding materials and enables precision micromachining.
